My husband is honest with me – for better or worse.  Sometimes he is honest with me when I would prefer that he lie a bit. For example:

All in all, I prefer his honesty.  I can rely upon it and I trust him.

#343: Book Review – Sacred Marriage May 8, 2012

Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas had a profound effect on me.  The message is that God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy.  Marriage brings me happiness, but not always.  If you look to marriage only to make you happy, you will be disappointed.  Humans are lacking and we all have a hole inside, a loss, a yearning.  That lacking is supposed to be filled with God.  If we don’t fill it with God, we try to fill it with other things: shopping, food, power, alcohol, etc.  If we try to fill it with our spouse, no matter how wonderful they are, they will fail.  They too are sinners.  But if you fill that void with God, and have your spouse as a mate throughout your life, things will go much better.

The book looks at how we can use the challenges, joys, struggles, and celebrations of marriage to draw us closer to God and grow in Christian character.  It helps to see marriage as a kind of ministry, and a tough one.

“This is the reality of the human heart, the inevitability of two sinful people pledging to live together, with all their faults, for the rest of their lives.”

The book asks us to use the challenges of marriage as opportunities to learn more about God, to understand God more and to learn to love him more.  Marriage should push us to be more of service and to be less selfish.  Confronting our own selfishness has enormous spiritual value.  The focus should be on changing ourselves not our spouses.  It’s about spiritual growth and marriage is just the context.  It’s an excellent book.  Here’s a closing quote:

“Just as celibates use abstinence and religious hermits use isolation, we can use our marriage for the same purpose – to grow in our service, obedience, character, pursuit and love of God.”

Husband and I were walking to the club one day.  I was talking about my post about him being CEO of our family.  I realized that I made a mistake and had 2 CTOs (Chief Transportation Officer and Chief Technology Officer).  I told my husband and he said, “That’s OK.”

“You say that like it’s not important,” I said.

“It’s OK.  It’s a blog.  It’s not like it will be on the news.”

He helps me not take myself too seriously and always makes me laugh.  I’m laughing now as I type this.  🙂

#325: Being his best friend April 20, 2012

My husband is my best friend.  That is different from being my BFF.  BFFs are girls.  I have one of those too.  But my husband will always be my best friend, my better half.  🙂

#321: Movie Mondays – Bridesmaids April 16, 2012

Bridesmaids (2011 film)

Bridesmaids (2011 film) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Year: 2011

Genre: Comedy/Romance

Description from http://www.IMDb.com: Competition between the maid of honor and a bridesmaid, over who is the bride’s best friend, threatens to upend the life of an out-of-work pastry chef.

Wife:  This movie is really about the maid of honor and it is more about friendship than marriage. But I’m a sucker for wedding movies so there you have it.  It was very funny. I love Maya Rudolph, she is so naturally funny, earthy and quirky.  The themes of the movie are friendship, believing in yourself, loving yourself, and competition between friends.  Kristen Wiig‘s character is so very likeable.  Melissa McCarthy‘s character is crude but hilarious.  (Warning: there are definitely some unladylike scenesand foul language in this movie).  However, very funny movie.

Husband: I thought it was hilarious at times and contrived at others.  Melissa McCarthy stole the show.  She was the funniest but was not the focus of the movie.  This movie was better than The Hangover.

Husband-Wife Compatibility Rating: 8 (Wife gave it a 10, husband gave it a 6).

My husband is not a morning person.  Understatement.  I am.  One morning as we were walking to the car to go to work, I started looking around in the yard.

“How many of these little bushes did we get from the nursery?” I said.

“Three,” he said.

“But isn’t that one too?” I said.

“I don’t know,” he said.

“That’s a mum.  I’ll have to cut that back,” I said.

Then I looked at the side yard.

“Look.  Grass is starting to come up.  Or maybe that’s moss.  Do you think that’s moss?” I said.

“I don’t know.  It’s too early for a botanical quiz.” He said.

That husband.  🙂

#305: The Walter Show March 31, 2012

Have you seen the Ronald karaoke Geico commercial?  If you haven’t you should.

Anyway, the other morning my husband Walter started singing the Ronald song.  He was cracking me up.  A few minutes later I said, “Sing the Ronald song again.”  He said, ” You’re always asking me to do things.  Sing this song.  Make this sound.  Do this.  Do that.  I’m like, no.  You’re always wanting to watch the Walter show.”

Well, yes!  Of course I am.  When you have a husband as funny as mine, you want to watch he Walter Show all – day –  long.  He’s my favorite show!
